Natural Gas & Electricity
Energy Choice in Michigan
The deregulation of energy was established to allow consumers, businesses and industries the ability to choose their energy supplier and remain competitive, while bringing jobs and economic development to the state. In Michigan, Energy Customer Choice started in April 1998 with a pilot program, and today has four natural gas Customer Choice programs in effect — Consumers Energy, DTE Gas Company, Michigan Gas Utilities and SEMCO Energy Gas Company. According to the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC), over 460,000 customers are participating statewide in natural gas customer choice, with approximately 18 percent participation in 2013. By giving consumers the ability to choose a natural gas supplier, competition opens up a greater variety of pricing plans and gives the customer the power to choose the rate option that is best for their home or business.
